Historic list of numbers

The only lottery where you’re guaranteed to NEVER lose money.

How it works:

  1. Pick any 4 digit number between 0000 and 9999.
  2. Pay $1 a day to yourself, seven days a week. Keep money somewhere safe. It is yours.
  3. Check New Jersey Pick 4 Midday for number.
  4. If your number doesn’t come up, you’ve virtually won $1.
  5. If your number does come up, you’ve failed to win that day’s payout. Subtract it from your total winnings. You do not have to pay anything.

According to statistics*, you should win $1 a day. If you play more than 10,000 days, chances are you will have won the lottery in that time, but the payout will be less than the money you’ve put in.

To learn more about the lottery, you can read or listen to our Daily Curio on it. To be clear, this is a lottery is name only. No money is exchanged. You “win” by not spending money to buy a losing ticket.

*The statistics are more complicated than they first appear. In order to do a full analysis you’d have to consider duplicate numbers and taxes. Also, if you invest that $1 or put in a savings account, you’ll make more than $1 per day.

The odds a highly in your favor that you’ll come out ahead if you play the College of Curiosity Daily Pick 4 instead of any other lottery.

  1. It’s funny. I have been following this, but not participating. I decided to try looking at the historic list that you post a link to. My first number of choice 3141 has never won. But had I played my birthday, I would have won 2000+ in August.

Still, I would have lost all those other days.

    • It’s all psychology. We look back at the history and think “oh, so close!” but in the long run, you’re odds of being ahead by NOT playing are astronomical. But that’s no fun, so we play in reverse and get a little “win” every day our number doesn’t come up. 🙂
